From: Most Reverend Daniel E. Thomas
Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo
Fulfillment of the Sunday and Holy Day Obligations for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Day:
After reviewing the information provided by the Committee on Divine Worship and undertaking several discussions on the topic, it is my understanding, and it will be the norm in the Diocese of Toledo, that the two (2) obligations to participate at Mass are not fulfilled by the participation at one Christmas Vigil Mass. Rather, the faithful, to fulfill both obligations, are to assist at a Mass celebrated for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, and at a Mass celebrated for the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord.
The following is the official policy of the Diocese of Toledo:
Whenever a county/city within the Diocese of Toledo is placed under a Level 3 Snow Emergency, during which all roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel, the Catholic churches within that geographic region will cancel the scheduled Saturday Vigil, Sunday, or Holy Day Masses. Roman Catholics in that region, therefore, are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass. If Masses are cancelled, Catholics are encouraged to participate in Holy Mass via television, radio, or internet, making a spiritual Communion. When Mass is cancelled, all other diocesan, parish, or school events in that geographic region are also cancelled.
Here at the Shrine considering our location we need to go a step further on challenging weather days.
When there is a Level 2 Snow Emergency in Sandusky, Seneca and/or Huron Counties the State discourages any unnecessary travel. While Mass is very important event we also do not want anyone to get hurt.
Under a Level 2 or Level 3 Snow Emergencies Mass will NOT be publicly offered at the Shrine and the Gift Shop will also be closed. On those days, the Lord will make a special effort to hear your prayers at home.
We hope this won't be necessary but we feel this is the best and safest policy for all.
